OIL FACTS

- Of the 107 million U.S. households, 8.1 million use heating oil for their primary heating fuel (Source: Energy Information Administration (EIA) - 2002)

- Of those 8.1 million U.S. households, 6.3 million (78%) are located in the Northeast (Source: EIA - 2002)

- In 2001, 5.4 billion gallons of heating oil (82% of total residential heating oil) were sold to residential customers in the Northeast (Source: EIA - 2002)

- The cost of a gallon of heating oil is determined from the cost of retrieving the crude oil (51%), plus the cost of the refining process (9%), and the cost of marketing and distribution (40%) (Source: EIA - 2002)

- Factors that usually determine how much the price of heating oil fluctuates -
  • Seasonal Demand
  • Crude Oil Prices (determined by weather, economic, and wartime conditions)
  • Local Market Competition
  • Regional Operating Costs (Transporting the fuel to remote locations, etc...)
(Source: EIA - 2002)

- Steps you can take to lower your heating oil bill -
  • Arrange to have your oil tank filled in late summer
  • Consider a budget plan with Exeter Fuel
  • Ensure your furnace is cleaned and tuned up before heating season starts
  • Insulate your home, caulk windows and use weatherstripping around doors
  • Have Exeter Fuel install a programmable thermostat to better control temperatures when you are not home
  • If you are on a limited income, try seeking assistance from Federal and State energy assistance programs, such as the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Please see the "Related Links" button on the left for contact information for these programs.
  • For Mobile Home Owners (Or Anyone With Outside Fuel Tanks And Exposed Tank Lines) -
    • Insulate the exposed oil tank lines to prevent fuel from gelling in extreme cold weather (below 20° F). Properly insulating these lines not only will keep your home warm, but also may help to prevent waterpipes from bursting
    • Exeter Fuel recommends using Kerosene or a Kerosene/#2 Heating Oil mix for homes with outside oil tanks (Please call the office if you need more information!)
